General Information

Festival guests will enjoy music performed by middle school and high school musicians in the beautiful state-of-the-art Poway Center for the Performing Arts (PCPA) theater. The Orchestra Showcase on Wednesday evening and the Winds Showcase on Thursday evening feature performances by high school ensembles of the highest caliber from the Poway Unified School District.

Ensembles performing on Tuesday and before the dinner break on Wednesday and Thursday will be attending a sight-reading session in PHS Room N-2 (see the Festival Venue Map). Spectators are welcome to view the sight-reading session. Parents should meet their musicians at Sight-Reading Room N-2 and not in the PCPA after their performance. The students will be proceeding with their group directly to Room N-2 from the rear exit of the PCPA.

PLEASE NOTE: The festival organizers will try as much as possible to keep performances on schedule. However, because of unforeseen circumstances, performances may not start precisely at the published times. It is recommended that guests should allow ample time to find parking and plan to arrive at the auditorium 15 minutes before the performance that they want to view.

PLEASE NOTE: All guests must leave the PCPA auditorium during the dinner breaks on all three days. The break is 5:45-6:15 p.m. on Tuesday, and 4:45-5:45 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. During the break, guest are welcome to enjoy the outdoor concessions on the PCPA plaza.

Showcase Admission

All performances on Tuesday, April 9 and before 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday, April 10 and Thursday, April 11 are free for all guests.

Admission to the Orchestra Showcase at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday and the Winds Showcase at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday is $10 for adults and free for students aged 18 and under. Cash, check, or credit cards will be accepted at the admission table near the front entrance to the PCPA auditorium.

Please note that all guests must leave the PCPA auditorium during the dinner break (5:45-6:15 p.m. on Tuesday, 4:45-5:45 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday). If you will be attending the Festival in the morning or afternoon on Wednesday and Thursday, and plan to see an evening Showcase, you will need to pay the admission fee to be re-admitted.

Directions & Guest Parking

For directions to the Poway Center for the Performing Arts, see the PHS/PCPA Map & Directions document.

Guests are encouraged to attend the Festival, but unfortunately visitor parking on the Poway High School (PHS) campus is not permitted before 2:30 p.m. There may be limited on-street parking in the neighborhoods surrounding PHS, including southbound Espola Rd between Titan Way and Summer Sage Rd, and on northbound Riparian Road between Titan Way and Oakstand Road. After 2:30 p.m., guests may park in the PHS parking lots on Titan Way and Espola Road, but not in the reserved lot immediately behind the PCPA (see the PHS Campus Map).

Members of the audience should turn off their cell phones and other electronic devices during performances. Flash photography is prohibited in the PCPA.

Performances are evaluated by a panel of music educators from the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association (SCSBOA). The adjudicators will be located in the mezzanine (balcony) of the auditorium. They will be recording their comments throughout the performance and may be heard quietly talking. These comments and evaluations are a part of the festival procedure and are intended to reinforce the learning process.

The Poway Festival organizers will not be posting a public rating results board. Students and parents should speak to their music director for the rating results for their ensemble.

Concession will be provided by the Poway High School Music Boosters. Items range from $1 to $5. Students should plan to bring $6 to $8 to purchase a meal.

SCSBOA Awards Merchandise

Official SCSBOA Festival medals, cloisonné pins, patches and stickers, which indicate the rating earned, may be purchased by individuals. They are often worn on uniforms or kept as souvenirs of achievement. Students should bring the appropriate amount of money with them, as pins, medals, and stickers will not be available after the day of the Festival except through a special order made by the school's director. Only cash will be accepted.

The cost for merchandise is as follows:

  • Medals (Superior or Excellent) - $5.00
  • Pins (Superior or Excellent) - $5.00
  • Patches (Superior or Excellent) - $3.00
  • Stickers (Superior or Excellent) - $1.00
